7 Epic Activision Games That Shaped the Gaming Industry

Anyone that has ever owned a gaming console or played games on PC is familiar with the Activision brand. From their first video game Dragster in 1980 to the latest instalment of the Call Of Duty series, their list of games is an exceptional one.

It is more incredible that they have been in the video game production industry for over four decades. Here’s a list of the best titles released under the Activision brand.

Rome Total War 2

This PC strategy game was made for Windows by a company called Creative Assembly and was published under the Activision brand. It is part of the Rome: Total Wars series and is set during the period of the early Roman Empire and the Roman Republic. Players can choose to control one of three Royal families and try their commanding skills against various enemies. Many think of it as one of the best video games ever made.

As a strategy game, there was no such thing as an “aimbot” for this franchise but many incredibly popular cheats still existed to give you an advantage over your opponent.

Although not a FPS (and hence no aimbots available) Rome Total War 2 is widely heralded as one of the best games of all time, and definitely one of the best Activision games ever released.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

It’s incredible how Activision has managed to stay relevant after all those decades since they got in the video game production industry. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice got released in March 2019, and in just a few months, it got both the critics and the gamers singing the same praises. By September 2019, the company sold almost 4 million game copies, which is a testament to how good the game is.

This action-adventure game takes place in Japan during the Sengoku period. The main character is on a quest to revenge his dead lord that was kidnapped and killed by a rival Samurai clan.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater

The game was developed by Neversoft and is considered an absolute classic. It is the first installment of the Tony Hawk series and according to many, the best one. As expected, the video game is all about skateboarding. All versions were critically acclaimed, except for the GameBoy Color.

The design is exceptional for that period, the controls are very responsive, and there was a lot you can do. It was one of the most innovative games in 1999 that set the benchmark for every upcoming skateboarding-simulation video game.

Once again, there were no aimbots for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater as there was nothing to aim for! However, there was a large culture in identifying “cheats” and “bugs” in the game (such as the infinite drop cheat) which would increase your score.

Doom 3

Doom 3 is a first-person horror video game that was a game-changer when it was released. The game was made for Windows and is a recreation of the original Doom. However, it is a very different game from the original Doom instalments and follows its very distinctive path. The events take place on Mars, where an experiment has gone wrong has opened the gates of hell.

Return To Castle Wolfenstein

You can’t make a list of best Activision games without mentioning an epic title like Return To Castle Wolfenstein. It was released about 18 years ago on 19th November 2001, and it was a smashing hit. It can be played in single or multiplayer mode. The single-player mode is story-based, while the multiplayer mode is all about teamwork.

Overwatch

First released in May 2016 by Blizzard Entertainment, Overwatch has been without doubt one of Activision’s most successful “modern era” games. Well timed to capitalize on the explosion of popularity of streaming and eSports, Overwatch rapidly became one of the most popular games of the decade, grossing over $1B in revenue during the first year of release, and over 50 million players.

Despite the pro scene, Blizzard did have early issues as cheating was prominent in the game, with Overwatch aimbots frequently being used by many players. These aimbots had varying levels of skill, with some being detectable and most similar to “point and click” aimbots of earlier eras, while others had far more complex abilities including ESP, auto-target detection and even lag avoidance.

Popular Overwatch aimbots often include ESP functionality such as displaying enemies through walls (etc) in red hit boxes (as shown on right hand side)

Early in the days of Overwatch there were even some rumors that these aimbots were being used in the “pro scene”, although these claims were never substantiated.

Destiny 2

Bungie developed this multiplayer and released under the Activision brand in 2017. Not only that, it was an instant hit with the players that couldn’t get enough of the Guardians and their missions to protect Earth’s last city.

That year Destiny 2 won the Game Critics Awards 2017 for best game, was voted Best Social/Online Game and Best Multiplayer Game at Gamescom 2017, and many others.

Call Of Duty 2

The first “Call Of Duty” video game was released in 2004, and it was a hit as pretty much every new installment of the Call Of Duty series. There are millions of fans of the Call Of Duty series across the world. The latest installments are continually setting records both in sales and popularity.

However, if there is one installment to rule them all, then it has to be “Call Of Duty 2”. Call Of Duty 2” was for the “Call Of Duty” franchise the same thing that was Terminator 2 for the Terminator series. That puts the significance of this installment into an excellent perspective.

Graphics, gameplay, story, theme, and everything else feels perfectly sync into an epic game. The game was released in 2005, and it took the world by storm. Even today, 15 years later, it remains relevant and cherished as one of the best first-person shooter games in the world.
